Abstract:
This workshop will provide practical information regarding writing instruction for individuals with CCN. Beginning with the earliest phases of writing development, the workshop will emphasize writing through conventional writing of a variety of text types. It is widely accepted that many individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) have significant difficulty learning to read and write. Yet, reading and writing can clearly contribute to overall communication competence. In the past decade, the recognition of the relationship between literacy and communication for individuals with CCN has led to a dramatic increase in attention to theory, research, and practice regarding reading, but little work has been directed toward improving our understandings of writing. In this workshop participants will learn about theory, research, and practice as it relates to emergent and conventional writing instruction for individuals with CCN. Work samples, videos, and hands-on experience will provide participants with an opportunity to develop an understanding of key concepts underlying writing assessment and instruction for individuals with CCN. Intervention goals and strategies that integrate successful writing and communication development will be shared. The use of high-end communication devices and light-tech alternatives will be described and demonstrated. Specific case examples of writing development for individuals with CCN including those with the most significant disabilities including deaf-blindness will be highlighted.
